The English and Wales Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the final, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

If the pools play out according to the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
