Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
