A defense official has revealed that the MoD is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and staff have been instructed to avoid talking about secret information in all vehicles.
Safety Advice for MoD Staff
In a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about secret material while riding in China-made cars.
The minister explained that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any car, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Defence Background
This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and cause disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This wider security environment highlights the significance of robust protocols and caution in all aspects of government operations, including transport use to discussions habits.
