The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
